Summertime Health and Happiness Tips for Kids (secret: just add water)

Summer is absolutely upon us again. I know this because I don’t get any blogs written, we’ve used up most of our frequent flyer miles, our swimsuits smell vaguely of mildew and my baby’s got a farmer’s tan (if you think Daddy’s happy about this, think again - and check out our blog on sunburns and suntans). I don’t know when the official solstice is, but we might as well name the beginning of the seasons based on the school calendar anyway, right?

It’s time for us all to refresh our memories on how to keep our kids healthy and hydrated amidst all the travel, high temperatures, and variations in routine. Summer can be a super-healthy time, full of outdoor play and refreshed minds -- given the appropriate precautions...Here are some of my favorites:

Well, its been a while since we’ve challenged ourselves at Mommy’s ER (childbirth aside) and I’m delighted to say that my son still eats breakfast like a champ -- check out our series on the breakfast challenge -- link here. Now today, watching my sweet new baby boy roll over for the first time, his expression reminds me of the level of determination and satisfaction that a good challenge provides -- even what appears to be a small one. So what better day to launch a new challenge -- cleaning our house with natural cleaning products? I mean, rolling is just a hop, skip and jump away from crawling, toddling and otherwise putting our floors to the test. I want to make sure the floors are ready for his exploring mouth and tender skin.

10 Great Immune-Builders

Well, it’s Spring, and for a nice change of pace, nothing seems to be ‘going around’ these days among school or neighborhood friends. Everyone’s healthy and enjoying our newfound flowers and gorgeous 75 degree weather (to my friends and readers in colder parts, I apologize for my insensitivity and promise, it’s coming...) Still, when seasons transition is always a good time to boost immunity, so that our children’s little bodies are ready for the weather and dietary changes that naturally come with the shift. Here are my favorite immune boosting tips, to be used during any time of travel, climate change, or when something seems to be ‘going around’, in hopes that we can all look forward to a happy and healthy Springtime.
 

1. Wash hands, and wash hands again

Maddie’s Ultimate Blueberry Banana Smoothie

In honor of Spring, and 22 days and counting into our breakfast challenge, Maddie has come up with the ultimate smoothie recipe. Absolutely indulgently delicious, and chalk full of potassium, antioxidants, and good-for-you fats, the word straight from Maddie’s kitchen: ”You gotta make this...SOO good with the coconut milk and honey!!”

For protein, you can add yogurt, protein powder (whey or hemp both taste great and add protein punch) or a side of whole grain toast and nut butter.

Please forgive us if you are still trapped in the snow (in which case, stick with hot oatmeal, and file this away for a couple of months!), in Austin it hit 90 degrees last week...

Keeping Our Children Healthy This Summer

Summer is nearly upon us – and with it, a lot of changes, excitement, and challenges for our little (and too rapidly, I fear, not-so-little) ones. Some of the changes in temperature, activities, and schedule may be obvious to us as we transition our children into summer programs, take them on vacations, and spend more time outdoors – at the pools, playgrounds and outdoor events. Some of the changes may be less obvious to us – the dramatic changes our children’s bodies make when they move from the outdoors to highly air-conditioned indoor activities, the digestive changes their bodies make from season to season, the immune challenges their bodies may face when traveling.
